A pre-bariatric surgery psychological evaluation is a common prerequisite step for undergoing a bariatric surgical procedure. An evaluation may be requested by your bariatric surgeon and your insurance company for several reasons, including: to determine that you will be able to establish and maintain the post-operative lifestyle changes necessary to ensure the success of your surgery; to determine that you are emotionally prepared to undergo bariatric surgery; and, if necessary, to recommend additional supports either before or after the surgery. The primary goal of the bariatric psychological evaluation is to ensure your safety by identifying risk factors and barriers to your health and well-being post-surgery.
The pre-bariatric surgery psychological evaluation consists of two parts: a 60-minute clinical interview and the administration of psychological tests, including mood and behavioral questionnaires. The written report of findings from the clinical interview and psychological tests is completed within one week and will be sent directly to the bariatric surgeon.
