For my first blog post, I wanted to take a few minutes to introduce myself. As you may already know, my name is Dr. Benaaz Russell, PsyD, CEDS, and I’m a Licensed Psychologist and Certified Eating Disorder Specialist at Wellington Behavioral Health in Wellington, Florida. I have over 10 years of experience in eating disorders, trauma, personality disorders, and substance abuse. I work with adolescents, adults, and older adults, helping them to overcome their difficulties and heal in a safe, compassionate, and therapeutic environment.
My Education and Background
I grew up in the suburbs of Maryland, close to Washington D.C. I stayed close to home for college, receiving my Bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland and my Master’s and Doctoral degrees from Argosy University in Washington D.C. I then headed to Florida, where I completed my doctoral internship at The Center for Group Counseling in Boca Raton and my post-doctoral residency at The Renfrew Center of South Florida.
I continued on at The Renfrew Center, becoming a primary therapist and IOP team leader. I also worked as a primary therapist at The Watershed and at The Palm Beach Institute’s Eating Disorder Center as well as Program Director at The Lukens Institute. Prior to opening Wellington Behavioral Health, I worked as the Director of Admissions at Monte Nido & Affiliates and Clinical Director at Monte Nido and their Affiliate, Oliver-Pyatt Centers.
I am currently a member of the American Psychological Association and the International Association of Eating Disorders Professional (IAEDP). I served as a Board Member of the South Florida Chapter of IAEDP from 2012 to 2014.
My Work at Wellington Behavioral Health
In the journey to recovery, I provide individual, family, and couples counseling as well as meal support therapy. I’m also available to provide a comprehensive consultation for potential clients, including a thorough assessment, treatment planning, and level of care recommendations.
My specialties include:
Eating disorders and recovery
Addiction and recovery
Trauma and grief recovery
Personality disorders
Mood and anxiety disorders
Stress management
Phase of life issues
Work-life balance issues
Bariatric evaluations
I’m very lucky to get to do work that I love. As a Psychologist, I’ve always been fascinated by the human mind and behavior. I love having the opportunity to play a role in alleviating my client’s suffering and building up their courage. My interest in eating disorders stems from the devastating impact of this illness coupled with the general lack of awareness and high stigma surrounding it. I’m continually inspired by the resilience and strength of this population.
When asked about my favorite part of my job, the answer is simple: I love learning from my clients. They always teach me something through their hard work and dedication to change.
My Personal Life
Outside of the office, my top priority is spending as much quality time as I can with my family and friends. I live an active life. I enjoy watching and playing tennis, biking with my daughter, and going to the beach (you can’t help but be mindful when you’re near the ocean!). I also love animals, especially dogs. During my downtime, I like watching vet and animal shows as well as travel and food shows.
